What’s the Difference Between a Conservatory and an Orangery?

A question we’re asked every week – and it’s worth knowing before you decide

Conservatories are predominantly glass, including the roof. They maximise natural light and come in a range of traditional and contemporary styles. Thanks to modern uPVC profiles and advanced glazing technology, today’s conservatories are far more thermally efficient than older designs, comfortable to use in all seasons.

Orangeries originated in 17th-century Europe as heated spaces for growing exotic citrus trees – hence the name. Today they’re a premium alternative to a conservatory, featuring solid brick or uPVC pillars, large windows, and a flat roof with a central glass lantern.

They feel more like a proper room extension, warmer, more private, and architecturally bolder. If you want something that sits seamlessly between your home and garden, an orangery is worth serious consideration.

Customizable Styles to Suit Any Home

Our Conservatories come in a range of styles ensuring a perfect fit for any property.

    Victorian Conservatories
The classic choice. A faceted bay front creates a traditional feel that suits period and older properties beautifully, while filling your home with natural light from every angle.

    Edwardian Conservatories
Our most popular style for good reason. The square or rectangular footprint makes the most of your available space, ideal if you want a proper dining room, playroom, or garden retreat.

    Gable Conservatories
A full-height vertical gable end gives this style a striking, contemporary edge. High ceilings create an airy, open feel that works brilliantly on modern homes.

    Lean-To Conservatories
Sometimes called a “Sun Room” or “Mediterranean” style, the lean-to is a simple, clean-lined structure that suits bungalows and homes with limited height restrictions. Low-profile, practical, and very cost-effective.

    Energy-Efficient and Comfortable

Built with multi-chambered uPVC profiles and advanced glazing, these conservatories offer outstanding thermal performance, with U-values as low as 1.4 W/m²K. This ensures a comfortable environment year-round, whether it’s warm in the summer or cozy in the winter. The high-quality seals also prevent drafts and heat loss, lowering your energy bills.
